A blog of all the foods. Brought to you by two Boone girls. :) |
is the best brain-child known to man. It is a potluck of wonderful, glorious foods. If the weather’s nice, the food only adds to the atmosphere. If it is crappy weather (as is the forecast for later today), the warm foods and togetherness of people only make it that much greater. Foods on the agenda for today are Bojangles, potato cheese soup, chips & salsa, some sort of dessert, and much more. I am so psyched.
I’m also psyched for Appalachian to kick some ass today at the game. You can do it, Mountaineers! :)
Unfortunately, we both decided that real food is definitely enjoyable to have every once in a while, and not the real food that we found on the tray returns (though those foods were delicious). Food is delicious: when we want it, no matter where we are. Freeating is definitely something to do when you have time to do so.
We did pick up a major observation about people in general: so much food is wasted. People take food, and then 1. Decide they didn’t want that food. 2. Get full and don’t finish that food., or 3. Don’t like the food and don’t bother giving it to someone else who does. I will admit, before the past few days, I did this often. I may even do it again after this without thinking about it. We found an entire salad one day, and an entire box of fries. Why would you not take it with you?
“Scavenging” for food can get a bit weird at times, for the people around us. From now on, we’re going to limit our freeating and buy food when necessary. Problem solved! Breakfast in the morning, and who knows what’s for lunch?
NOTE: We definitely did not quit! We simply shortened our time period of freeating for lack of any other way to freeat, and for my never-dying love of Mountain Dew and my body’s need for caffeine. :)
Breakfast this morning: non-existant. We had planned on staking out Trivette for all the good breakfast foods, giant waffles included, but of course our alarms went off and neither of us moved. I woke up again at 9:44am, for a class in Wey (10+ minutes away) at 10am. Awesome.
So back to the foods. Starving and restricted to drinking water since I could not purchase my daily amount of Mountain Dew or coffee, I met back up with Audrey around noon at Upper Central. There, we found a full plate of lasagna and a cup of grapes. Score! We found a few more things before going about our own day.
Dinner was unsuccessful. So was trash can searching. Better luck next time!
I had originally planned to use this for food reviews around App’s campus. However, my friend, roommate, and accomplice Audrey has concocted a lovely plan. Tuesday through Saturday (or possibly next Tuesday?) of this week, we are participating in the ever-so-popular activity of Freeating - free eating. Youtubed by Hamish and Andy, freeating has three rules:
1. You cannot buy food.
2. You cannot be given food.
3. You cannot steal food.
And the last rule is that they are not allowed to use the same tactic twice. Audrey and I are not quite to that level. Maybe later this semester! So, without further a-do..
DAY ONE. We found a pastry in our room that one of our friends had left from the last week or so. Safe to say that’s not stealing! The half that I got was definitely eaten for breakfast; Audrey is smarter and still has hers for later. We met back in the dorm for lunch: a box of six pieces of sushi that was found last night on top of a trash can outside Sanford Hall. Resourceful? Of course. We had also found a Twizzler, which was broken in half and eaten by the both of us for a very whole, delicious dessert. Yum.
Slightly later on, we ventured into the world of Upper Central dining hall. There, the tray return is sectioned off by a wall and is therefore harder to see by those dining outside. I saw a pizza crust and went for it, then heard, “Is that the best you can do?” So we turned around and met a fellow freeater (we’re not certain why he does it…) and he coached us on the art of taking food that people no longer want. Another pizza crust was dropped off, which we took. Then the best find of the day: Audrey saw a guy drop off a nearly full, excluding three pieces, box of sushi. California rolls! He paid $5.49 for it and only ate three pieces. Who does that?
Dinner was at 8pm, after both McAlister’s was closed and Upper Central was closed. So we staked out a table by the tray return in Lower Central and were very successful in scoring a full box of Chick-Fil-A fries, two half-empty bags of cafeteria fries, a chicken wing, and an entire salad that was not even touched. Only a few people stared.
Anyway. To the library, trash cans, and leftover sushi. Be back tomorrow!
